Updating your headline

Updating Your Headline: ~15-30 minutes

If there's one module to really pay attention to, it's this one. Grab a beverage, make sure Fido is walked, and your email notifications are off because it's time focus!

The search bar on LinkedIn functions as a search engine. Not only does your title make you searchable on LinkedIn, but it's the first thing someone sees when you pop up in their results.

Now that you know how the search bar functions, let's make creating your title even easier. Choose one these two formulas to update your LinkedIn headline:

1. Virtual Assistant | I help (clients) with (skills).

Examples:

- Virtual Assistant | I assist C-Suite executive with administrative tasks like travel, calendar, and inbox management.

- Virtual Assistant | I help startups and solopreneurs manage their online presence and grow their income through direct sales on social media.

2. Virtual Assistant - Niche (skills or industry)

- Virtual Assistant & Transaction Coordinator, assisting real estate agents in California

- Virtual Assistant & editor, assisting freelance writers and content marketers.

FAQ

Should I use buzzwords in my title?

  • If you're currently using buzzwords like Chief Happiness Offer or Ninja in your title, get rid of them. Chances are slim to none that people are actively typing in "Happiness Officers" into the search bar when looking for an assistant.

Should I say that I am looking for a job right now or actively seeking clients?

Nope, do NOT put "Unemployed," "Looking for a job," or "Currently seeking work" in your headline.

  • Use your headline to showcase the skills you have that are relevant to the client you want.
  • Remember that the goal is to make you more searchable, so be strategic with your word choice. Clients are probably not typing in "looking for a job" in the search bar.

Can't I just keep my title as "Virtual Assistant?"

You could, but you'd be missing an opportunity to catch a client's eye. Remember, there are nearly 500,000 OTHER virtual assistants on LinkedIn too. A generic title like "Virtual Assistant" alone doesn't provide prospective clients with any additional insights about you or specialty skills that you may have.
